Ingredients

  • 12 slices white bread
  • 12 slices cheddar cheese
  • 1 large yellow onion sliced
  • 2 large tomatoes sliced
  • ½ cup chutney
  • butter softened
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • ½ tsp ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat your braai or grill to medium (see notes), around 350-400°F (175-205°C)
  • Spread each slice of bread with a liberal amount of chutney
  • Top the chutney with two slices of cheese per sandwich
  • Layer the sliced tomatoes and onions on top of the cheese
  • Season the sandwich with salt and pepper, and then place a slice of bread with chutney on to finish
  • Spread the outside of each sandwich with softened butter
  • Place the sandwich in a braai grid or tie it with butchers twine soaked in water
  • Braai/grill the sandwiches until the outside is toasty and the cheese has melted
  • Slice the sandwiches and serve

Notes

  1. If you’re cooking over wood or coal, let them burn down until your braai, grill or BBQ reaches a medium heat
